More of the world embracing gays

Gay globeThis past weekend, Moscow erupted in violence as gays marched and the police cracked down on them. And as Russia becomes increasingly intolerant, much of the world is becoming more accepting of homosexuality.

A new report, released by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, examined trends in over 30 countries regarding their attitudes towards homosexuality. Approval of gays actually increased in 27 countries and decreased in only four: Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Russia.

In Russia, for example, 59 per cent of the population disagreed with homosexuality in 1991. That increased in 2008 to 64 per cent. Yikes!

The most tolerant countries include the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Switzerland, proving there are intelligent people out there. But it does mean our fight for equality is far from over.
