Gianni Versace murder focus of next "American Crime Story’"

Gianni VersaceThe third season of American Crime Story will be based on the 1997 murder of designer Gianni Versace (pictured) by serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

The Ryan Murphy anthology series will be titled Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story. The actual plot will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth, and the series will follow Cunanan through his several murders; the story will then explore the death of Versace in 1997 and the ensuing manhunt. Cunanan committed suicide before being taken into custody.

The FX-produced series found tremendous success with its first season. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story came out earlier this year and won 9 Emmy awards.

The second season, called Katrina, is scheduled for early 2017 and will explore the aftermath of  Hurricane Katrina. Versace/Cunanan will actually be shot at the same time, but no release date has been given.
