Group asks gays not to see 'Ender's Game' movie

Ender's GameGeeks OUT, a group that promotes the queer side of geek culture, has launched an online protest against Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game movie. The group is calling on the LGBT community to avoid seeing the movie when it comes out in November.

The movie is based on Card's popular 1985 novel of the same name, and explores a futuristic battle between humans and an insectoid alien species called buggers.

The "Skip Ender's Game" initiative, however, is not about the movie specifically. It is simply hoping to "keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets" because of his anti-gay views.

"By pledging to Skip Ender’s Game, we can send a clear and serious message to Card and those that do business with his brand of anti-gay activism -- whatever he’s selling, we’re not buying," Geeks OUT officials wrote. "The queer geek community will not subsidize his fear-mongering and religious bullying. We will not pay him to demean, insult, and oppress us."

In 2009, Card joined the board of directors at the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a group which has actively opposed same-sex marriage. He also wrote a 2009 Mormon Times editorial, saying: “Marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down."

Having read the book, there are more reasons to avoid the movie than a homophobic author (such as terribly one-dimensional characters and a rather weak plot). Save your $13 and wait for The Hobbit, Part 2 in December!
